What is IFS therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a transformational approach to healing that conceives each individual as a system of protective and wounded inner parts trying to keep us safe.

Each part has its own beliefs, feelings, and characteristics. By listening to our inner parts, we can embrace them in a positive way so they begin to work in harmony, rather than be forced into extreme roles that may lead us to fear and even inflict harm.

During a session clients are supported in bringing compassion to their wounded inner parts in order to heal the past, re-harmonise the inner system, and gain control over their present.

How does IFS work?

IFS therapy facilitates healing by enabling individuals to access and address their protective and wounded inner parts. By first connecting with the Self, clients can gain insight into these inner aspects and from that core, come to understand and heal their parts.

IFS Therapy helps clients relax, allowing those parts of our personality we have buried (exiles) to ascend, freeing memories, emotions, and beliefs associated with them (burdens) that were previously locked away.

What are the benefits of IFS?

  1. Healing Inner Parts: IFS helps individuals identify and address their protective and wounded inner parts. By acknowledging and understanding these aspects of themselves, individuals can work towards healing and integration.
  2. Accessing the Self: Through IFS, individuals learn to connect with their core Self, which remains undamaged and possesses innate healing capabilities. Accessing the Self provides a stable foundation for self-awareness and growth.
  3. Promoting Inner and Outer Connectedness: By fostering a connection with the Self, IFS promotes inner harmony and resilience. This inner alignment often extends to improved relationships and interactions with others, leading to greater external connectedness.
  4. Navigating Emotions and Behaviors: IFS offers tools and techniques for managing difficult emotions and behaviors by understanding their underlying causes. This allows individuals to respond more effectively to challenges and conflicts.
  5. Cultivating Positive Qualities: Through the 8 Cs (confidence, calmness, compassion, courage, creativity, clarity, curiosity, and connectedness), IFS encourages individuals to cultivate positive qualities and strengths, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced life.
  6. Addressing Trauma and Past Experiences: IFS provides a framework for working through past traumas and experiences that may be impacting current behaviors and emotions. By exploring and healing these wounds, individuals can experience greater emotional freedom and resilience.
  7. Empowering Self-Leadership: IFS emphasizes the concept of self-leadership, where individuals learn to navigate their inner world with compassion and understanding. This empowerment allows individuals to take control of their lives and make choices aligned with their values and goals.

Overall, IFS offers a comprehensive approach to personal growth and healing, empowering individuals to explore their inner landscape with curiosity and compassion.
